FRANKFURT (Reuters) – German car companies may need help to compete with a wealthy field of bidders for Nokia’s high-tech mapping unit HERE, as the entry of technology company Uber into the fray signals interest from deep-pocketed Silicon Valley players, bankers and executives close to the deal said.

German auto makers Daimler – the company that owns Mercedes-Benz – BMW and Volkswagen’s premium car division Audi have clubbed together to submit an indicative bid as a consortium, two sources close to the auto companies told Reuters.

The German carmakers can probably justify stumping up around $785 million (700 million euros) each to match HERE’s book value, but could be easily outbid by technology companies who enjoy higher valuation multiples and have more cash.

Some investment bankers said they hoped private equity could join up with the automotive companies to create an industrial consortium which would not be dominated by one particular company.

454963848Taxi service Uber has submitted a bid, worth $3 billion, the New York Times reported, citing people with knowledge of the offer.

At such a price, Nokia could afford to keep a stake in the business it bought for $8.1 billion in 2007 and now values at 2 billion euros in its books and still realize a gain, one banker told Reuters.

The companies declined to comment.

High-definition mapping has emerged as a key feature for autonomous driving and connected car services which could evolve into a $50 billion market, analysts at Exane BNP Paribas say.

HERE’s high-quality maps enable automakers to offer premium services that Google maps cannot match.

For example, their maps can be linked to a mobile phone signal in a way that allows parents to see exactly on which side of the school their children are waiting to be picked up – and the car can route the navigation system accordingly.

They could also combine with real-time traffic information in a self-driving car to help customers get to work faster or spend more time writing emails on the way to the office.

Daimler’s Chief Financial Officer Bodo Uebber told German daily Handelsblatt in comments published on Friday: “We are watching the situation closely. High-definition maps are a prerequisite for autonomous driving.”

Third party?

While HERE has become increasingly distant from Nokia’s core operations as it prepares to integrate its giant acquisition of telecom networks rival Alcatel-Lucent, the Finnish company may still have an interest in retaining a stake.

Nokia has hired advisors from Evercore to test the market for potential buyers and solicited a second round of indicative bids, a person familiar with the matter said.

Although it remains unclear how many parties are competing, bankers say there is a rivalry between two categories of bidders: the industrials and tech companies.

The auto companies cannot afford for HERE to fall into the hands of a player such as taxi app company Uber or Apple, who may block their access to it. They also want to have a say in the development of the company Nokia bought for $8.1 billion in 2007 because they are HERE’s largest customers.

“We do care who ends up owning this business,” an industry source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Bankers say HERE is a natural asset for Apple, which has fallen behind in the area of mapping, although the Californian technology company has given no sign of being interested.

With a market capitalization of $721 billion, the technology giant is worth more than Daimler, Volkswagen, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat Chrysler, Ford and General Motors put together.

Take a selfie to turn off your alarm, this new alarm app lets you do that

Tired of always getting late because of ‘Five more minutes’? – We often turn off our alarms with one eye open then go back to sleep, later to wake up an hour late for work.

This new app helps you overcome that problem, Snap Me Up is a new free app that requires you to take a selfie in order to turn off the alarm on your phone, ingenious much?

By the time you wake up and prepare to take a selfie, you would be wide awake, thus returning to your bed would be entirely your fault. How this app works is Snap-Me-Up-2

you set up your alarm on the app, Just watch the camera, turn on the lights, open your eyes and snap! Yours pictures will be saved into an album called: “My sleepy snaps”, where you can watch or share them. The alarm will not be dismissed until your face is detected on camera and you take a photo of it, also making sure you woke up like this.

This app also has a timer that lets you  for example to take a quick nap or to take off your cake from the oven in time. There is also another awakening method that will wake you up with a different image every day, the picture will be taken from your gallery at random.

Although its nothing new under the sun, (there has been alarm apps that require you to take several actions like solve a puzzle etc) it relates more with the younger crowd, but still open to all.

The app is available for Android and maybe for iOS soon

Here’s why windows 10 is ‘the last version’ of windows

msoft_windows_10_devices-100465060-primary.idgeFollowing the successful launch of the windows 10 platform , Cortana and HoloLens, Microsoft held its annual Ingnite conference where Micrososft employee  Jerry Nixon reported that windows 10 will be ‘the last version of windows’ in a statement : “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.”  which Microsoft later came to back it up saying it reflects the company’s opinion.

An obvious reaction of shock flooded the internet as people wondered what that meant for Microsoft and windows as a service.

To come to the internet’s aid, Windows is not going anywhere, however their plan for windows is nothing but amazing.

This meant Microsoft is branding windows to simply just windows (meaning there will no more be any XP, 7,8 but just Windows) which means windows 10 will be the last major upgrade of windows.

“Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers,” explained Microsoft in its full statement to the Verge. “We aren’t speaking to future branding at this time, but customers can be confident Windows 10 will remain up-to-date and power a variety of devices from PCs to phones to Surface Hub to HoloLens and Xbox. We look forward to a long future of Windows innovations.”

This windows will be a single major version of windows that will power and function across all Microsoft hardware while delivering a continuous flow of updates. These updates may technically carry code numbers or names, but they won’t be heavily flagged and most users will simply see themselves as running ‘Windows’ – a platform which is always the latest software Microsoft has to offer.

Windows 10 which is ‘the last version of windows’ will still be free as for the first year of its launch, as mentioned in the keynote earlier in the year, and updates will be free up until a certain point, users will in future have to pay for certain updates while the service remains free.

M-KOPA Solar power lights up over 20 000 homes

M-kopaM-KOPA Solar today announced that it has connected over 20,000 off grid homes in Uganda affordable solar power. It is now expanding its distribution nationwide and targeting to add 50,000 more homes by the end of 2015.

M-KOPA Solar is the global market leader of ‘pay-as-you-go’ energy for off-grid customers. Launched in Kenya in October 2012, M-KOPA now provides solar power to over 150,000 Kenyan homes.  M-KOPA began pilot operations in Eastern Uganda in mid-2013 and is now scaling up across the country.

M-KOPA’s rapid growth has been driven by its revolutionary payment plan, which makes high-quality solar affordable, even to those living on low-income. Customers can acquire the company’s latest solar system – the M-KOPA III – for a deposit of UGX 99,000 plus 365 daily payments of UGX 1400. The daily price is cheaper than what customers would pay on average for the equivalent in kerosene lighting and charging services.

After a year of daily payments, customers own their systems outright with no further billing. The deposit is fully refundable and customers can receive real-time customer support from M-KOPA’s toll free call center, 7 days a week. All payments are made conveniently over either MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money platforms.

The M-KOPA III comes with an 8W solar panel, a high quality lithium battery, two LED solar lights with switches, a solar rechargeable LED torch, a solar rechargeable radio and a mobile phone charger. The M-KOPA III is upgradeable to include two additional solar lights – sold separately.

Jesse Moore, Managing Director and Co-Founder, M-KOPA Solar, says, “We are very proud of the M-KOPA III solar home system and our success to date in Uganda. Together we are helping Ugandans get rid of kerosene, improve their standard of living and save money all at once. It’s a win-win for everyone.’’

M-KOPA Uganda has added more than 20,000 customers in the past 15 months. According to Anthony Weremaka, General Manager, M-KOPA Uganda: “In Uganda M-KOPA is now connecting over 500 new homes to solar each week, and even bigger growth lies ahead. We have nearly 100 terrific staff and 200 sales agents across the country who earn a good income selling M-KOPA products and services. We’ll be doubling in size over the course of this year and so looking for other talented people to join our team, be part of this great company and change people’s lives.”

Customers are connected at one of the 15 service centers across the country, or they can call 0800122333 to arrange an appointment with a direct sales representative. The number of service centers are set to double to achieve national distribution by end of this year.

Jesse Moore concludes, “In many markets around the world, solar is seen as something of a luxury. But in Uganda solar is giving people an essential foot on the energy ladder and helping them save money. We are proud to have 20,000 customers already but also know we are only beginning to make our positive impact in Uganda – the best is yet to come.”
